About the race

The Spitfire Scramble is a 24-hour multi-terrain relay or solo race. It takes place in Hornchurch Country Park, former home of RAF Hornchurch and a squadron of Spitfire fighter planes during World War II. Find out more about the hsitory of the site at the Hornchurch Aerodrome Historical Trust.

You can run on your own or in teams of two to eight runners. As you run through the night, the event will put your speed, endurance, torch batteries and teamwork to the test in the only event of its kind in the London area.

The event will start at midday when your 'squadron leader' begins your first 5.75-mile lap. As a team you will not stop again until midday the next day. Each squadron can have a maximum of one runner on the course at all times and runners must complete a full circuit before handing over to a team mate. Full rules here.

Runners and their supporters can begin arriving from Friday afternoon to set up camp, familiarise yourselves with the course and soak up the atmosphere. Camping is free! Catering, toilets and hot showers will be available, along with sports massage service and first aid.
